To Congresswomen of the Afghan Parliament To Organizations that work for women’s rights and peace To our friends of RAWA
We would have liked to be in
Kabul on March 8th and celebrate together International Women’s Day.
Due to security reasons, fundamentalism harassment and lack of guaranties to
exercise the rights of assembly and expression that you are suffering it seems
unwise and risky to travel at this moment to Afghanistan.
And, even, we can put you in a risk. .
We have read with great concern, the latest news coming from your country, specially, those related to the rally in a football stadium of 20.000 former muhayedines. Kabul’s football stadium has been the place where men and women were executed publicly during the Taliban regime. The rally demanded President Karzai the enactment of an impunity law for war crimes, and was chaired by Vice President Abdul Karim Khalili. Banners in the meetings read: “Dead to the Human Rights Commission and the enemies of Afghanistan” and the fundamentalist member of Parliament Shakila called for “Dead to Malalia Joya!”, who is also a member of Parliament and a well known defender of justice, democracy and human rights. All this shames, horrifies and sadness us. President Kharsai has promised obedience to the Constitution. The Constitution forbids any amnesty law for war crimes, as well as demands respect and protection of human rights. We expect the Afghan government to uphold and defend the Constitution as the only way for the advancement of democracy and the reconstruction of the country. The rights of women are an essential part of that process. We shall judge the advancements or back falls of democracy in Afghanistan according to the respect of the rights of women, with no concessions to fundamentalist of one or other faction.
We might be far away, but we keep
an eye on your struggle for democracy and the rights of women. Your delegates
explained to us during their visit to our Parliament the hardships you go
through. Afghanistan is probably the most difficult place to uphold women’s
rights. Therefore, you are an example for all of us. We look forward for the
improvement of the necessary conditions to be able to correspond to your kind
invitation and visit your beautiful country. Until them, please accept the
solidarity of us, Fátima Aburto
